We review trending app concepts so you don't have to waste a sprint finding out the hard way.
Every few months, a new wave of "the next big thing" rolls through tech Twitter, Product Hunt, and your founder's Slack messages at 11 PM. Some of these trends are genuinely worth building. Others are resume-driven development dressed up as innovation.
At Apptitude, we build apps for a living. We also tell clients when not to build something, which is arguably the more valuable service. This is Ship It or Skip It -- our take on what's trending, what's worth your engineering hours, and what belongs in the idea graveyard.
AI-Powered Everything Apps
The Trend: Every SaaS product shipped in 2026 has "AI-powered" somewhere in the tagline. AI-powered note-taking. AI-powered invoicing. AI-powered to-do lists. If your app doesn't have a sparkle icon next to at least one feature, did you even launch?
The Reality Check: There is a canyon-sized gap between "AI-powered search" and "we call the OpenAI API and display the result." Most of what ships as AI-powered search is really just semantic search -- you generate embeddings for your content, store them in a vector database like Pinecone or pgvector, and do a cosine similarity lookup instead of full-text search. That is genuinely useful. It is also about forty lines of code and a managed service. It is not magic.
The real architecture question is where you draw the line. A note-taking app with solid semantic search and summarization? That is a legitimate product improvement. Here is what that actually looks like: you embed notes on write using an embedding model, store vectors alongside your relational data in PostgreSQL with pgvector, and at query time you do a hybrid search combining keyword matching with vector similarity. You need a reranking step to blend those results, and you want to cache aggressively because embedding generation is not free at scale.
But the moment you try to make AI the entire product -- "AI writes your notes for you, AI organizes your notes, AI reads your notes back to you in a soothing British accent" -- you have a problem. You have built a thin wrapper around a foundation model, and your moat is exactly as deep as the time it takes someone to paste the same prompt into ChatGPT.
The hidden complexity people underestimate: latency budgets. Users expect search to return in under 200 milliseconds. A round trip to an LLM for reranking can eat 800ms easily. So now you need a streaming architecture, optimistic UI patterns, and a fallback path for when your AI provider has a bad day. That is real engineering, and most teams skip it.
Verdict: Ship It With Caveats. Build AI features that solve a specific, measurable problem in your app. Semantic search, smart categorization, draft suggestions -- these are worth it. But if your entire value proposition is "we put AI on it," you are one API pricing change away from an existential crisis. The winners will be apps that use AI as a feature multiplier, not apps that are features of AI.
Social Audio 2.0
The Trend: Clubhouse is a ghost town. Twitter Spaces exists in the way that the appendix exists -- technically present, arguably vestigial. But podcasting revenue hit $4 billion and live audio keeps showing up in product roadmaps. Someone in your next planning meeting will suggest "what if we added a live audio feature?"
The Reality Check: Here is why social audio is brutally hard to build and even harder to sustain.
The real-time audio pipeline alone is a serious infrastructure commitment. You need WebRTC for peer-to-peer connections (or, more realistically, a Selective Forwarding Unit for anything beyond five participants). You need an audio mixing service. You need echo cancellation, noise suppression, and automatic gain control -- and no, you cannot just rely on the browser's built-in implementations, because they are inconsistent across devices. Services like LiveKit or Agora handle the heavy lifting here, but you are still looking at $0.002-0.004 per participant-minute, which adds up fast when you are running rooms with hundreds of listeners.
Then there is the moderation problem, which is the reason Clubhouse actually died. Real-time audio moderation is an unsolved problem at scale. You can do speech-to-text and run content classifiers, but you are always 10-30 seconds behind the conversation. By the time you flag something, three hundred people already heard it. Your options are aggressive human moderation (expensive), post-hoc enforcement (ineffective), or small trusted-speaker models (limiting).
If you want recording and transcription -- and you do, because ephemeral content is a losing strategy -- you need a pipeline that captures audio streams server-side, processes them through a transcription service like Deepgram or Whisper, does speaker diarization so you know who said what, and stores everything with proper indexing. That is a whole microservice unto itself.
The architecture we would actually recommend if a client insisted: use LiveKit for the real-time layer, run a sidecar process that captures the room audio for recording, pipe that to Deepgram for near-real-time transcription, and build your moderation tools around the transcript stream rather than trying to analyze raw audio. Store room metadata and transcripts in your primary database, audio files in S3 with CloudFront distribution.
Verdict: Skip It. Unless audio is core to your product's identity and you have the budget for ongoing infrastructure costs and a dedicated moderation strategy, this is a feature that will eat your roadmap alive. The better play for most apps is to integrate with existing podcast infrastructure or build async voice messaging, which sidesteps the real-time complexity entirely.
QR Code Commerce
The Trend: Remember when QR codes were the punchline of every tech joke? Then the pandemic happened, every restaurant replaced their menus with QR codes, and suddenly your grandmother knows how to scan one. Now QR codes are showing up in payment flows, product packaging, event ticketing, and retail experiences. The question is whether you should build a QR-code-first commerce flow.
The Reality Check: The technology itself is dead simple. QR codes are just encoded URLs. The interesting engineering is everything that happens after the scan.
Deep linking is where things get gnarly. When someone scans a QR code, you need to route them to the right place -- and "the right place" depends on whether they have your app installed, what platform they are on, and what content you are linking to. On iOS you are dealing with Universal Links, on Android it is App Links, and both have their own configuration quirks and verification requirements. If the user does not have your app, you need a smart fallback -- either a web experience or an app store redirect with deferred deep linking so the context survives the install flow. Branch and AppsFlyer handle this, but the integration is never as clean as the sales demo suggests.
Offline handling is the second trap. QR codes work great in environments with spotty connectivity -- warehouses, outdoor events, subway stations -- which means your commerce flow needs to gracefully handle the case where the user scans a code and has no network. Progressive web app patterns help here: cache the product catalog on first visit, queue transactions locally, and sync when connectivity returns. This is straightforward to architect but easy to get wrong in the edge cases.
Fraud is the third concern. QR code phishing -- sticking a malicious code over a legitimate one -- is trivial to execute and surprisingly effective. If you are building payment flows, you need server-side validation of every code, short expiration times for dynamic codes, and visual confirmation steps so users can verify they are paying the right merchant. Signed QR payloads using HMAC or asymmetric signatures add a meaningful layer of protection.
The architecture: generate dynamic QR codes server-side with signed payloads, use a redirect service that handles platform detection and deep linking, implement a lightweight PWA shell for the post-scan experience, and build your payment confirmation flow with multiple verification steps.
Verdict: Ship It. QR codes are one of those rare technologies that got a genuine second life and are now backed by real user behavior change. The technical challenges are well-understood and solvable. If your product involves any kind of physical-to-digital bridge -- retail, events, logistics, hospitality -- a QR-code-driven experience is worth building. Just do not skip the fraud prevention work.
Hyper-Personalized Onboarding
The Trend: TikTok shows you content you love within thirty seconds of opening the app. Spotify's Discover Weekly feels like it was curated by your best friend. Now every B2B SaaS product wants that same "it just gets me" feeling in their onboarding flow. The pitch: use AI to analyze user behavior from the first click and dynamically customize the onboarding experience.
The Reality Check: This is one of those ideas that sounds brilliant in a product review and becomes a nightmare in a sprint planning session.
The core problem is the cold start. TikTok and Spotify have billions of behavioral data points to bootstrap their recommendations. Your B2B project management tool has... the user's email domain and maybe their job title from the signup form. You are not doing machine learning personalization with that. You are doing if-else statements with extra steps.
What actually works for B2B onboarding personalization is a tiered approach. Tier one is firmographic: use the email domain to look up company size and industry via a data enrichment API like Clearbit or Apollo, then select from pre-built onboarding templates. This is simple, effective, and takes maybe two sprints to build. Tier two is behavioral: track which features the user engages with in their first session and dynamically reorder the remaining onboarding steps. This requires event tracking (Segment or a lightweight custom pipeline), a simple rules engine, and A/B testing infrastructure to validate that your personalization actually improves activation metrics. Tier three is the actual ML-driven personalization -- collaborative filtering based on similar users, predictive models for churn risk, dynamic content generation. This requires a data science team, months of data collection, and a mature experimentation platform.
Most teams should build tier one, instrument for tier two, and stop pretending they need tier three.
The ROI math is where this gets real. If your onboarding completion rate is 40% and personalization bumps it to 55%, that is a 37.5% improvement in activated users. For a SaaS product with $100 average monthly revenue, that math gets compelling fast. But the improvement from tier one (template-based personalization) to tier three (ML-driven) is often only a few percentage points -- not enough to justify the engineering investment for most companies under Series B.
Verdict: Ship It With Caveats. Build the simple version. Firmographic personalization and behavioral step-reordering will get you 80% of the value at 20% of the cost. Invest in proper event tracking from day one so you have the data to go deeper later. But unless you have a data science team and tens of thousands of users generating training data, skip the ML-driven approach and spend those engineering hours on making your core product better.
Not every trend deserves a place on your roadmap. The best product teams are ruthless about distinguishing between "interesting technology" and "technology that solves our users' problems." Before you add a card to the backlog, ask two questions: what is the actual architecture required to build this well, and does the ROI justify that investment?
